# The World According to Bush- Documentary 91 min Free Film Fri May 27 6:00 PM Red Victorian Peace Cafe 1665 Haight @ Cole http://www.argusfest.org/sanfrancisco FREE FILMS ($5 suggested donation but no one turned away) Conversation at 6 pm. Film starts at 630 pm Friday-May 27th The World According to Bush- Documentary 91 min a two-hour documentary about the inner-workings of the Bush administration, will alarm even the most hardened Washington-watchers. Who are the Bushes? Apparently, they're the "quiet dynasty" of modern America-but in reality, their "dynasty" is one of inconceivable family secrets, painstakingly concealed. The current president's grandfather, Prescott Bush, made his fortune by managing Nazi companies after Hitler seized power. In 1942, his companies were confiscated for collaboration with the enemy. George Bush Sr., president from 1988 to 1992, armed and financed Saddam Hussein. He approved the shipping of germ warfare strains to Iraq, enabling the country to launch a chemical attack against Iranian troops and the Kurdish population. The World According to Bush aims to show how the Bushes, father and son, have not only dined with the devil, but have often invit ed themselves to his table. The bin Ladens and the Bushes have been longtime business partners, and the family of the future terrorist chief indirectly financed George W. Bush's political career. This unnatural alliance has continued since the Sept. 11 attacks: Bush Sr. is a top official in one of the biggest private investment funds in the USA, Carlyle, a group that has invested heavily in the arms industry. The Bradley tanks and the missiles used in the latest war against Iraq are made by firms controlled by Carlyle…'and the bin Ladens. For the latter are Bush's associates within this investment fund. # The Really Really FREE Market! Saturday May 28, 2005 12-4pm at Dolores Park http://www.reallyreallyfreemarket.org

We would love for you to come and offer your special gifts and talents at this event.

The RRFM is based on the idea of a gift economy, namely that giving feels good; that if we were to all to share what we had, we wouldn’t have less than we have now, we’d actually all have more than we currently have. Giving is a pleasure in itself. Gift others with your clutter. Gift others with your talents. Gift others with your presence!

Bring *your thing* to the event, whatever that is! Material goods, a service to provide, a skill you have that you want to teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

The Really, Really Free Market consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.

This is not an event for bartering. This is not an event to advertise your company or yourself, leave your businesscards at home! It’s about gifting without the expectation of anything in return, and it's about taking without feeling the need to reciprocate to that individual.

Material goods to give: Books, clothing, odds and ends, etc.; healing arts: massage, reiki, yoga; circus arts (performing and teaching): juggling, poi, stilts; sports and games: soccer, frisbee, etc.; bicycle repair; there will also be a kids' space with facepainting, games, and more; and of course, food!

This is now a regular event in San Francisco. The second Really, Really Free Market is being held on:

Saturday May 28, 2005 from 12-4pm at Dolores Park.

If you like what you just read, get involved! Come to the event! Bring your own gifts to share! Spread the info and get more people involved! This event takes YOU to make it happen!

Please respond with your thoughts, ideas, what you plan on bringing to the event, etc.

See you May 28th!

# Sun May 29 10am-4pm COB Workshop Memorial Day Weekend
@ the OAKLAND ZOO http://cityrepair.org
http://www.oakland.cityrepair.org

How long has it been since you
played in the mud?  Do you want to spend a Sunday learning how to
build out of cob?  Help us build a COB bench to memorialize the Xerces
Blue Butterfly.  This beautiful fluttering friend was a local to the
Bay Area before degradation of its habitat lead it to extinction.

COB, also known as "Monolithic Adobe," is a mixture of sand, clay and
straw – wet enough to mold yet dry enough to build without forms.
While the term Cob originated hundreds of years ago in Whales, similar
Earth Building techniques are native to many indigenous and ancient
cultures across the globe.  Often mixed with the feet, and sculpted
with the hands, Cob can take on whatever shapes your imagination,
creativity and fingers-tips will allow!

Who?
-This is a CROW event [City Repair Oakland West]
http://www.oakland.cityrepair.org
What?
-a COB bench
Where?
-in the Oakland Zoo Butterfly Garden (in the Education Center)
When?
-Workshop:  Sunday*, May 29, 2005, 10am – 4pm
Why?
-to memorialize the Xerces Blue Blue Butterfly
How?
-with our feet, with our hands, with mud!
Attire?
-Come prepared to get muddy.
How much?
-Donations not necessary, but always welcome and much Appreciated.
(Suggested Sliding Scale $5 - $15 – certainly no one turned away for
lack of funds).  Donations will be used toward tools and materials for
this project and upcoming City Repair projects.

*There will also be informal work parties on Saturday, May 28th 10am -
4pm, and Monday, May 30th 10am - 4pm.  Volunteers are welcome to join
in the fun.

All levels:  beginners to advanced natural builders welcome!  Please,
help us by passing this information along to folks who might be
interested.

(This event is appropriate for adults and children of all ages,
creeds, colors, humors, and dispositions).  Laughing, singing, dancing
and playing are highly encouraged . . .

This project is produced in conjunction with the Education Center of
the Oakland Zoo.  It is co-sponsored by the Altars of Extinction
Project, which draws attention to the negative impacts of ecologically
irresponsible human development by commemorating local species which
have become extinct by human activities.

For more information about City Repair - Oakland West, please go to
our website at http://www.oakland.cityrepair.org   For more information about
the workshop, or to find out how you can help, email

Review of Jake Weinstein’s “Body Burden” Show

Body Burden is a three actor, three act show about environmental health and breast cancer. It presents a strong message that every woman and every person who cares about women’s health should hear. Jake was able to combine comedy, science and drama into this story which presents the multiple conflicts of interest in the health care industry. It exposes the politics of breast cancer research, treatment and environmental health. It talks about difficult issues with a touch of humor and slapstick comedy and, as one viewer said, “It really makes you think” Clever and poignant, it is motivational and inspiring to those of us in environmental health advocacy.

# Join PETA for an Unhappy Cow Demo on 5/31 in San Francisco!

As you may be aware, PETA’s lawsuit against the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAD) over their deceptive “Happy Cows” ads hit a brick wall when the California Supreme Court refused to hear the case. In response, we’re launching a new campaign asking California residents to decide for themselves if dairy cows are happy. The campaign will kick off with a series of demonstrations throughout California, which is where you come in! Could you spare some time to join PETA’s Matt Prescott to help hold signs and hand out leaflets at a demonstration?

PETA demonstration
Tuesday, May 31st from 12 – 1pm (meeting at 11:45am sharp)
CA Supreme Court building in San Francisco , 350 McAllister @ Polk

This demonstration can’t happen without you!  If you can lend your voice to help California’s suffering dairy cows, please RSVP to MattPrescott@peta.org with your name, number, email address and phone number. For more information, please visit http://www.UnhappyCows.com You can also watch what happens on California dairy farms to see for yourself just how unhappy the cows really are. Thanks for all you continue to do for the animals.

************** EMERGENCY GRAND JURY TEACH-IN

Tuesday May 31st @7pm
3030-B 16th Street between Mission / Valencia

At least seven local activists have been subpoenaed in the
last week to appear before a federal grand jury convened in
SF. In recent decades, the federal government has
increasingly used the grand jury to intimidate and harass
activists pushing for social justice.

Do you know your rights? Learn what you can do to protect
yourself and your community, and why you should know how
to resist this unjust process.

Speakers:

Mark Vermeulen The National Lawyers Guild http://nlg.org

Claude Marks Freedom Archives

Anita Carswell -Former grand jury resister

& Local activists with grand jury experience

COME SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY!
Check http://indybay.org for upcoming demonstrations.

Modern-Day Witch Hunts Must End!
As government repression in general increases, so does the
use of the federal grand jury to intimidate, incarcerate
and render impotent
activists across social movements. In recent years,
pressure on the animal rights, environmental justice,
anti-war and anarchist movements has increased
exponentially. At a recent hearing before the Senate
Committee on Environment and Public Works, John E. Lewis,
Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division
of the FBI, testified that,
“Investigating and preventing animal rights extremism and
eco-terrorism is one of the FBI’s highest domestic
terrorism priorities.”

STORE WARS: WHEN WAL-MART COMES TO TOWN - Documentary 74 min
In the US, Wal-Mart opens a new mega-store every two business days. This is the story of the impact of discount chain stores on American towns and cities, and on our society as a whole.

STORE WARS follows events in Ashland, VA, over a one-year period, from the first stormy public hearing that galvanizes residents' opposition till the Town Council takes a final vote on the proposed Wal-Mart store. Arguments for the store (tax revenues, low prices, jobs) and against it (destroys small town character, traffic, low-end jobs) are articulated and hotly debated. The cast of characters includes the mayor and Town Council members who will eventually make the decision, Wal-Mart representatives and the "Pink Flamingos," the grassroots citizen group opposed to the store.

STORE WARS does not single out Wal-Mart, but rather highlights its position as the icon of the Big Box industry. While offering a critical view of this industry, the film presents fairly all viewpoints on this controversial issue.

# ***UN World Environment Day in SF: Do We Have a Message for the World's Mayors?! CALL TO ACTION!!!*** Greetings, Bay Area & Northern CA Activists, Friends and Colleagues!

In the midst of the many crises we are facing right now--from US-sponsored genocide, torture, murder, war & occupation, and military coups, to whole-sale civil rights and tax-payer abuses--we are also LOSING THE PLANET, mostly through CORPORATE PIRACY. We have a RARE OPPORTUNITY to bring these DIRE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES out from the shadows into CENTER STAGE when mayors and media from around globe come to San Francisco for WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY, JUNE 2--5, 2005.

I just spent the last two hours going over the official calendar (http://www.wed2005.org), which is formidable--including forums, workshops, and reality tours by many reputable non-profits like GreenAction, Ella Baker Center, Urban Habitat, Global Exchange, and Public Citizen, among others. Our good friends who organized the BIOTECH WORLD CAFE during RECLAIM THE COMMONS 2004, are organizing two world cafes for the event, one on Buying Green to Save the Planet and one on the Precautionary Principle. There are also many wonderful, unofficial events, per the calendar that Alli Star just put out (email me if you didn't get this list and want it). Not surprising, the CORPORATE AGENDA is also well represented, with Mitsubishi, swissnex, NRDC, SF Dept of the Environment, Mayor Newsom, CPUC, among others, sponsoring corporate-control of renewable energy and other resources, "private/public partnerships," corporate control of "sustainable development," corporate greenwashing, and so on.

This is a GREAT opportunity to educate the public, the media, and the mayors regarding environmental issues near and dear to us: DEFORESTATION in California and around the globe, the proliferation of GMOs, ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM, CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY & GREENWASHING. The Mayor and the State are taking this opportunity to paint SF & CA GREEN, while dragging their heels on the shut-down of the PG&E plant, ushering in an upscale HOUSING DEVELOPMENT on an unclean SUPERFUND SITE, ignoring the HOMELESS and Housing Crisis, and HIKING MUNI FARES, because they refuse to tax BIG BIDNESS. ***Of utmost importance, the Dept of the Environment is considering ROLLING BACK its BAN on purchasing PRIMARY FOREST TROPICAL HARDWOOD--this is a precedent we do not want SF to set or other city governments to follow!!!!****

***WE HAVE MARVELOUS PROPS, SKITS, SONGS, & COSTUMES!!! --tree costumes, a giant redwood stump, killer tomato and corn costumes, Wizard of Oz accoutrements, Mourning Mothers (no blood for oil, use alternative fuels!) etc. We could re-purpose our Wizard Consumer Consciousness Action--Have the Brains, Heart, and Courage to Buy Small and Local, Fair Trade & Green!--to hit all the issues at the opening civic center plaza celebration (June 2 9--11:30), and follow up with more tightly focussed actions at other events.***

If you have any interest in planning or participating in some FUN STREET THEATER around DIRE ENVIRO ISSUES, please contact me ASAP!

Celebrating Water Democracy Community Speak-out for a Global Treaty on the Human Right to Water

United Nations World Environment Day 2005 June 2nd, 2005, 2:30- 4:30PM @ The Metreon, San Francisco

From Bolivia to Bayview-Hunter's Point, from Ghana to Alpaugh in California's Central Valley, communities are organizing for the right to safe and affordable water. This basic human right is being threatened by privatization, pollution, industrial agriculture and environmental racism, among many other injustices.

Celebrating Water Democracy! seeks to advance World Environment Day 2005 Accord Goal 7 on water, particularly Action 21, by creating a space for open and critical dialogue that encourages collaborative partnerships among those who are working to ensure the right to clean and affordable water. This event will promote participatory and environmentally sustainable models of water management as well as highlight innovative community-led public partnerships.

Community representatives will provide testimony to a panel of water rights experts in support of a new global initiative calling for a UN Convention on the Right to Water. This legally-binding framework promoting the human right to water would take precedence over international trade laws that grant corporations rights to commodify and privatize water/water utilities. It would also give communities a powerful tool to hold their governments accountable for providing safe water for all. For more information on this global effort please see http://www.bluewaterproject.org and http://www.wateractivist.org

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26 Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river?  We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes.  Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax.  All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead.  The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim. At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river's edge.  With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another. If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night.  Stay tuned for these opportunities… This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities.  The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners! The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person 'ducky' or a 4 persons raft.  The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service.  There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend. 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River. burningriver_ca@yahoo.com See you on the river!
